Would the Minnesota Timberwolves regret trading for Ben Simmons and possibly Tobias Harris?
The Ben Simmons-Minnesota Timberwolves rumors will never end as long as he’s a member of the Philadelphia 76ers. It’s been recently reported by Shams Charania of The Athletic that they may also trade for Tobias Harris. Would the Timberwolves regret trading for Simmons and possibly Harris?
The only way these rumors can be put to rest is if Simmons is traded to a new team.
If I had to put money on a Simmons trade in the next couple of days, I would guess that he’s moved. Daryl Morey has continued to show that he’s stubborn, and quite frankly, an idiot.
Would trading for Simmons make sense if you’re Minnesota? 100 percent. He fits the timeline and exactly what this team needs.
However, continuity is an important aspect for any team, especially one that has a hard time luring free agents. The opportunity cost of messing up the chemistry of this team could be massive.
Shams Charania of The Athletic reported this:
The Minnesota Timberwolves have also remained in conversations with the 76ers, but are unwilling to meet Philadelphia’s high threshold for draft picks. Minnesota has indicated an openness to discussing a package that includes Simmons and Tobias Harris, sources said, but that offer would not come with draft capital from the Timberwolves and the 76ers do not view both players as part of a salary dump trade.
I want Simmons, but I don’t want any part of a Tobias Harris trade. I used to really like Harris and would have loved the Timberwolves to acquire him through free agency or in a trade. However, he’s having a down season and will be paid $36-39 million over the next three years.
This season Harris is averaging 18.9 points, 7.3 rebounds, 3.8 assists. He’s also shooting 48.2 percent from the field and 34.2 from 3.
The size would be great, but the Timberwolves would be screwed salary cap-wise. Not to mention they’d likely have to send out D’Angelo Russell, Malik Beasley and either Taurean Prince or Patrick Beverley, plus picks.
You could argue that the roster would be upgraded talent-wise, but the chemistry would be messed up. The players in Minnesota love playing with and for each other.
If the Timberwolves were to trade for Simmons and Harris, they would regret that decision because of money and team chemistry.
However, only trading for Simmons may be a smart decision. Though, I would be hesitant to deal Russell because he’s been such a key part of this team’s success. He’s been a leader, and he’s one of the reasons this team is 28-25.
Long-term it might be the better move to trade for Simmons, but right now it’s tough to sign off on that decision.
If I were Sachin Gupta, I would seriously consider trading for Simmons, but that move might make more sense in the offseason because of the way this Timberwolves team is playing.
