Let's Talk Wolves

Where do the Minnesota Timberwolves go from here?

The Minnesota Timberwolves have unraveled the last two games and find themselves down 1-2 to the Memphis Grizzlies. The question becomes, where do the Wolves go from here?

Minnesota went into the playoffs with a ton of momentum. They defeated the Los Angeles Clippers and stole Game 1 on the road against the Grizzlies. However, they’ve looked completely lost these past two games.

Sure, the play-in game might come back to bite the Wolves in the ass because they’ve exuded more energy and effort, but there’s some real value there.

Minnesota entered Game 1 and looked like the better team. D’Angelo Russell started the game with an easy breakaway layup and gave the Wolves the early lead. There was a stretch where the Grizzlies gained some momentum and briefly took the lead, but there wasn’t any doubt in the Timberwolves’ minds.

Having Anthony Edwards, an absolute bucket getter, changes the dynamic of any game.

However, Game 2 came and went, and it was a night the Timberwolves would like to forget.

Minnesota lost that game by 28 points, and beyond the first quarter, there was never a chance for this team to make a comeback. There were too many whistles, and that killed the flow of the game.

The Timberwolves never found a way to get over that, and Steven Adams getting himself in foul trouble screwed the Wolves over. You could also look at the technical Patrick Beverley picked up early in the first as another key factor. All of these things led to the Wolves’ self-imploding, which ultimately created a blowout loss.

Game 3, well, I don’t even want to talk about it. Minnesota held two 20-point leads and blew both of them. The Timberwolves had a win probability of 98.7 percent in the third quarter. How do you even blow that?

Chris Finch and Karl-Anthony Towns are to blame for this game. When the Grizzlies were starting to make a comeback, Finch decided not to use a timeout and instead hoped the Timberwolves could hold onto the lead.

As for Towns, well, to put it nicely, he needs to grow up and figure out how to assert himself in this series. It’s unacceptable and embarrassing that he’s gone MIA these last two games. Last night when the Timberwolves needed him most, he was 3-for-4 from the field and tallied eight points.

That’s going to be the key to the rest of the series. Yes, Finch needs to fix some things coaching-wise, but this loss falls on the hands of KAT. There’s no reason your potential All-NBA center should be taking four shots in a game.

If he can dominate the floor like we saw pre-playoffs, then Minnesota has a shot at winning Game 4. But, if he comes out and looks like playoff KAT, then the Timberwolves can mail in this series.

Towns scored 29 points and made Steven Adams look like a DII player in Game 1. The result? A win.

The NBA has figured out how to guard Towns, and it’s up to him to find a way to dominate the game of basketball again. Minnesota isn’t out of it, but it’s starting to look like a pretty deflating series.
