Let's Talk Twins

What kind of impact will Donovan Solano have on the Minnesota Twins in 2023?

The Minnesota Twins are not done improving the roster, as Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reported the front office has agreed to a one-year deal with Donovan Solano. What impact will the 35-year-old veteran infielder provide the team this season?

At first, signing Solano doesn’t make a ton of sense because the Twins have good depth in the infield. It also means there will need to be a corresponding move.

With this transaction, the Twins will have to either remove someone from the 40-man roster or place someone on the 60-day IL. The obvious choice is to put Royce Lewis on the 60-day until he’s ready to play in June.

Most likely starters in the infield:

Reserves/Utility:

Joey Gallo will likely factor into some of those plans at first base as well.

Solano will likely play when others need rest or if there’s a lefty on the mound. Last season, the right-handed hitter hit .301 and posted an OPS of .770 against lefties. He’s a good hitter and will not be an easy out as the seventh, eighth or ninth hitter in the lineup.

Last season he hit .284, with an OPS+ of 97. Despite his age, Solano has posted great offensive numbers. He’s a former Silver Slugger winner and has hit over .300 twice in the last four seasons.

After losing Luis Arraez, the Twins were missing a player who can get on base every third at-bat. While Solano isn’t at the same pedigree as Arraez, adding the 35-year-old will help improve the offense.

Defensively, he can move around the diamond. Last season he played first, second and third and only caused two errors in 278 chances. He’s not going to win a gold glove with Minnesota, but he’s not a liability either.

If I had to guess, he’ll mainly play first base for the Twins. He was good at that position last season, despite his 5-foot-8, 210-pound frame.

This is an interesting move, but the Twins added a veteran hitter who will crush lefties and will provide offense in the backend of the lineup. It’ll be interesting to see what the Twins’ corresponding move will be and what they’ll do once Lewis is healthy.

He likely has a small impact this season, but he’s a competent hitter that will be a much-welcomed addition to the lineup.
