Vikings: An appreciation post for Dalvin Cook
The Minnesota Vikings desperately needed a win Thursday night against the Pittsburg Steelers, and Dalvin Cook’s performance was a huge reason they were able to move to 6-7 on the season.
When Cook was carted off due to a torn labrum two weeks ago, it was reported that he would miss a good chunk of time. There was a belief that he could return before the playoffs, but no one foresaw him playing on TNF.
When it was announced that he was playing against the Steelers, I was nervous and didn’t think it was a good idea. Alexander Mattison is a more than capable enough backup and would be a starter on most teams.
However, Cook didn’t look like he was in any sort of pain and kicked the shit out of the Steelers’ defense.
It was beautiful to watch.
A huge shoutout to the offensive line for making some of the most impressive holes for Cook to hit.
Cook went on to finish the game with 205 rushing yards and two touchdowns. It was the second time in his career he eclipsed 200 yards in a game.
Despite missing a few games this season, Cook has rushed for 978 yards and six touchdowns. He’s currently second in the NFL in rushing yards behind Jonathan Taylor. Barring some sort of long-term injury, he will finish with more than 1,000 yards for the third time in his career.
There’s no denying the talent level or that he’s best back on the roster. The issue has been his ability to stay on the field.
Cook played Thursday night with a shoulder harness, which added some extra protection. The Vikings are a better team when Cook is on the field, and it’s been evident since he entered the league in 2017. Minnesota is still on the outside looking in, but there’s a chance they make the playoffs.
The Vikings are currently eighth in the NFC behind the San Fransico 49ers and Washington Football Team. Washington has won their last four games, but their remaining schedule is against divisional opponents, and you never know how that will go.
Minnesota must continue to win if they want a chance at making the playoffs. Having a “somewhat healthy” Cook should increase their chances of making that happen.
