Twins: Minor League Report (5/23)
The St. Paul Saints didn’t have the best week in terms of wins and losses, but Alex Kirilloff’s performance was so good you’ll forget about all of that. The Minnesota Twins pitchers in the farm system have been really good this season, but that wasn’t necessarily the case this week.
Here’s who else made the cut:
Top Performers:
AAA
Alex Kirilloff, OF
6 Games, .360 BA (9/25), 1 HR, 5 RBI, 3 BB, 5 SO
- If Alex Kirilloff continues to play at an elite level, then he’ll be wearing that Twins uniform soon. After this week’s performance, he was awarded Minor League Player of the Week.
Jake Cave, OF
6 Games, .280 BA (7/25), 2 HR, 7 RBI, 1 BB, 9 SO
- Surprisingly, the Twins have not called up Jake Cave this season when they’ve needed help in the outfield. Minnesota has great depth out there, but his batting average of .224 hasn’t helped him.
AA
Spencer Steer, #10, SS
5 Games, .353 (6/17), 2 HR, 5 RBI, 1 BB, 1 SO
- The Twins should call up Spencer Steer soon. The 24-year-old is having an incredible season and deserves to be playing in St. Paul. This year he’s hitting .308, with eight home runs and 30 runs batted in.
Alex Isola, C
5 Games, .300 (6/20), 1 HR, 5 RBI, 2 BB, 1 SO
- Alex Isola has flown under the radar, which is to be expected when the Twins have multiple top prospects at Wichita. This season he’s hitting .308, with five home runs and 21 runs batted in. If he continues to stay hot, I’d like to see him at Triple-A.
Louie Varland, #15, SP
1 Game, 6.0 IP, 3.60 ERA, 5 H, 2 BB, 8 SO, 1 HR
- Louie Varland continues to impress at Double-A, and I don’t think it’s too farfetched to believe he can help the Twins out either this season or next. This year players are hitting .213 off him, and that comes as no surprise. He does need to limit the home run ball, as he’s given up six home runs over his last five appearances.
High-A
Cade Povich, #27, SP
1 Game, 1-0, 5.1 IP, 0.00 ERA, 2 H, 1 BB, 5 SO
- Cade Povich is a strikeout pitcher who has great command of the ball. This season he’s struck out 37 and walked seven in six games. Of those appearances, he’s only been roughed up twice but has looked sharp otherwise.
Bradley Hanner, RHP
2 Games, 0.00 ERA, 3.0 IP, 1 H, 0 BB, 5 SO
- Bradley Hanner has been extremely dominant for the Cedar Rapids Kernels this season. In 11 games, he’s 3-0 and has an ERA of 0.50. When he does make an appearance, he’s often been tasked with going more than one inning. You should keep an eye on the 23-year-old right-handed pitcher.
Low-A
Steve Hajjar, #21, SP
1 Game, 1-0, 5.0 IP, 0.00 ERA, 1 H, 1 BB, 5 SO
- Steve Hajjar has played well for the Fort Myers Mighty Mussels this season, and as the Twins’ second-round pick, that’s exactly what you want to see. Hopefully, he can increase the velocity of his fastball, but his changeup is a really good pitch.
