Twins: Minor League Monday (8/8)
The pitching may not have been the best this week, but the offense came to play. There are a few new faces in the Top 30 section after the Minnesota Twins had a field day trading away a lot of prospects.
Check to see who made the list:
Top Performers:
AAA
Jermaine Palacios, #22, SS
6 Games, .357 BA (10/28), 2 HR, 3 RBI, 2 BB, 2 SO, 1 SB
- How soon do people forget about Jermaine Palacios? There’s been a lot of discussion on Twitter as to who can be the Twins’ starting shortstop next season if Carlos Correa opts out and Royce Lewis isn’t ready to go. All I’m going to say is Palacios deserves to be in consideration talks.
Michael Helman, 2B
6 Games, .400 BA (12/30), 4 HR, 8 RBI, 0 BB, 7 SO, 1 SB
- Michael Helman could make his MLB debut soon if he continues to play well. He’s a very intriguing player with power and speed. The former Aggie has hit .283, with 16 home runs and 24 stolen bases.
Roy Morales, C
6 Games, .348 BA (8/23), 2 HR, 8 RBI, 4 BB, 6 SO
- Roy Morales is 27 and could be a player the Twins call upon if they need a backup catcher. However, there are about four other guys ahead of him at his position once Ryan Jeffers comes back.
AA
Edouard Julien, #23, SS
6 Games, .346 BA (9/26), 1 HR, 2 RBI, 1 BB, 9 SO
- Edouard Julien is probably the best offensive player in Double-A with Christian Encarnacion-Strand gone. He’s going to quickly climb the ranks and has a bright future as an offensive weapon.
Yunior Severino, 2B
5 Games, .409 BA (9/22), 1 HR, 5 RBI, 5 BB, 7 SO
- Yunior Severino got the call midweek to report to Double-A, and he didn’t disappoint. The 22-year-old has a bright future and could be someone we see make the rankings sometime soon.
Steven Cruz, #28, RHP
3 Games, 3.2 IP, 0.00 ERA, 1 H, 1 BB, 6 SO
- Stephen Cruz finally made the Twins’ top 30 prospect list. He has a mean fastball that reaches triple digits. If he improves his command, then he has a bright future as a late-game reliever.
High-A
Seth Gray, 3B
5 Games, .409 BA (9/22), 6 RBI, 0 BB, 7 SO, 1 SB
- Seth Gray has picked up steam over these last couple of weeks. The former fourth-round pick is hitting .252, with 11 home runs and 51 runs batted in.
Jon Olsen, RHP
2 Games, 0.00 ERA, 2.2 IP, 3 H, 0 BB, 6 SO
- Jon Olsen has made a few appearances recently on Minor League Monday. In 18.1 innings, the 25-year-old has walked four and struck out 26.
Low-A
Misael Urbina, #8, CF
6 Games, .360 (9/25), 1 HR, 3 RBI, 3 BB, 4 SO
- Misael Urbina will likely finish the season up in high-A. That’s where he belongs, and had he not been injured for the first part of the season, he probably would have already been promoted.
Rubel Cespedes, IF
6 Games, .333 BA (7/21), 1 HR, 4 RBI, 2 BB, 3 SO
- Rubel Cespedes is becoming one of my favorite players in the Twins system. The 21-year-old is hitting .303, with an OPS of .786. You’d like to see more power from him since he is 6-foot-2 and 210 pounds, but that should come with time.
Pierson Ohl, SP
1 Game, 5.0 IP, 0.00 ERA, 5 H, 0 BB, 7 SO
- The Twins former 14th-round pick started the season on a bad note but has slowly figured things out. After posting an ERA of 7.50 in April, Pierson Ohl has since kept it under four.
