Twins: Minor League Monday (8/29)
The Minnesota Twins can expand their roster on Sept. 1, and some of these players listed could be potential candidates for a promotion.
Keep reading to find out who was a ‘top performer’ this week:
Top Performers:
AAA
Matt Wallner, #5, OF
6 Games, .333 BA (7/21), 1 HR, 3 RBI, 4 BB, 7 SO, 1 SB
- Matt Wallner has struggled since being promoted to Triple-A. In 34 games with the St. Paul Saints, the Minnesota native is hitting .213, with four home runs and 16 RBIs.
Simeon Woods-Richardson, #6, SP
1 Game, 1-0, 5.2 IP, 3.18 ERA, 4 H, 1 BB, 8 SO, 1 HR
- Simeon Woods Richardson will be with the Twins in September or next season. I’d lean towards the latter, but he’s already making quick work in St. Paul. The 21-year-old has dominated lefties this season (.190 batting average).
Louie Varland, #10, SP
1 Game, 6.0 IP, 0.00 ERA, 3 H, 1 BB, 9 SO
- Louie Varland needs to be on the Twins roster come Sept. 1. He’s dominating Triple-A ball and would help Minnesota in the pennant race. In three starts, he’s given up two earned runs in 17.0 innings.
AA
Brent Headrick, SP
1 Game, 0-1, 6.0 IP, 1.50 ERA, 1 H, 1 BB, 9 SO
- Brent Headrick held a 2.34 ERA in High-A but has struggled since his promotion. In seven games for the Wichita Wind Surge, the left-hander has an ERA of 4.75. However, he’s started to bounce back after a rough month of July. If he can continue this trajectory, he will find his way to St. Paul soon.
High-A
Brooks Lee, #1, SS
5 Games, .304 BA (7/23), 3 RBI, 2 BB, 2 SO
- Brooks Lee is the Twins’ No. 1 prospect for a reason. Minnesota was aggressive in moving the first-round draft pick to High-A, but it’s working. In 76 at-bats, he’s hitting .329, with two home runs and 10 RBIs.
David Festa, #11, SP
1 Game, 1-0, 5.2 IP, 0.00 ERA, 2 H, 1 BB, 6 SO
- David Festa went from under the radar to a near top-10 prospect in MLB.com’s recent rankings. The former Seton Hall star has posted an ERA of 2.05 in 19 games this season.
Travis Adams, SP
1 Game, 0-1, 5.0 IP, 0.00 ERA, 6 H, 1 BB, 11 SO
- Travis Adams may have picked up the loss, but he only gave up three earned runs. Despite pitching five innings, the former 2021 MLB Draft pick struck out 11 of the 15 outs.
Low-A
Tanner Schobel, #13, SS
6 Games, .316 BA (6/19), 1 HR, 4 RBI, 3 BB, 8 SO, 3 SB
- Tanner Schobel has understandably started his professional career a little slower. In 77 at-bats, he’s hitting .234, with an OPS of .600. Hopefully, this week is what we’ll start seeing consistently.
Noah Cardenas, C
5 Games, .353 BA (6/17), 1 HR, 3 RBI, 2 BB, 3 SO
- Noah Cardenas has had an incredible month of August. The former UCLA star is hitting .377, with an on-base percentage of .500. He’s a defensive catcher, but it looks like his bat might be catching up.

1 Game, 0.0 IP, 0.00 ERA, 1 H, 0 BB, 0 SO
Misael Urbina, #8, CF
7 Games, .250 BA (6/24), 1 HR, 2 RBI, 3 BB, 11 SO
