Let's Talk Twins

Twins: Minor League Monday (8/22)

Daniel Gossett threw a no-hitter for the Wichita Wind Surge, and Chris Wiliams drove in 10 runs. Those are just two players that had an impressive week, but who else was a ‘top performer’? Keep reading to find out which Minnesota Twins prospects looked good this week.

Top Performers:
AAA

Jermaine Palacios, #18, SS
6 Games, .350 BA (7/20), 1 HR, 5 RBI, 2 BB, 6 SO

  • Jermaine Palacios rebounded nicely after a couple of bad games last week. The 26-year-old moved up the prospect rankings list after the MLB Trade Deadline, and it’s been well deserved.

Chris Williams, C
6 Games, .313 BA (5/16), 4 HR, 10 RBI, 3 BB, 5 SO

  • Williams is having a great season. The 25-year-old is hitting .274, with 23 home runs and 69 runs batted in between Double and Triple-A. The Twins should consider calling him up next if they need another catcher.

Jordan Balazovic, #15, SP
1 Game, 4.0 IP, 0.00 ERA, 3 H, 1 BB, 4 SO

  • I wouldn’t normally qualify this as a ‘top performer’ performance, but Jordan Balazovic has struggled all season. This is hopefully a start in the right direction because he still has the best stuff in the Twins’ farm system.
AA

Aaron Sabato, #26, 1B
5 Games, .278 BA (5/18), 3 HR, 8 RBI, 3 BB, 4 SO, 2 SB

  • I’m not super high on Aaron Sabato, given his defensive limitations and high strikeout numbers, but there’s no denying his power. The former first-round pick is still hitting .176 in nine games for the Wind Surge, but a walk-off grand slam is always fun to watch.

Yunior Severino, 2B
5 Games, .222 (4/18), 2 HR, 6 RBI, 4 BB, 6 SO

  • Yunior Severino played well in High-A, but he’s had his ups and downs since his promotion to Double-A. In 14 games, the 22-year-old is hitting .218, with an OPS of .710.

Cole Sturgeon, OF
5 Games, .412 (7/17), 7 RBI, 3 BB, 4 SO

  • Last week I stated that Cole Sturgeon will likely play elsewhere next season, but the 30-year-old has continued to pile together impressive performances.

Daniel Gossett, SP
1 Game, 1-0, 9.0 IP, 0.00 ERA, 0 H, 3 BB, 10 SO

  • Congratulations to Gossett for throwing a no-hitter on August 19. That night he struck out 10 and was absolutely dominant. What’s even crazier is he never pitched farther than two-thirds of an inning over his last five appearances.
High-A

Pat Winkel, C
4 Games, .385 BA (5/13), 4 RBI, 2 BB, 2 SO

  • Pat Winkel was the Twins’ ninth-round pick in the 2021 MLB Draft and has posted poor offensive numbers. The 22-year-old is hitting .230, with an OPS of .642. However, the former UConn star is more of a defensive catcher.

Jake Rucker, 3B
6 Games, .263 BA (5/19), 5 RBI, 4 BB, 8 SO

  • Jake Rucker lasted on the Twins’ top-30 prospect list for maybe two weeks. Defensively, he can move around the diamond, but he needs to develop some power on offense. If he can increase his slugging percentage (.384), then he will have a lot more success.
Low-A

Misael Urbina, #8, CF
6 Games, .435 BA (10/23), 1 HR, 4 RBI, 3 BB, 4 SO

  • I’m really high on Misael Urbina. In 168 at-bats, the 20-year-old is hitting .298, with an OPS of .848. He’s a player that will cook pitchers when he gets hot at the plate.

Ben Ross, SS
5 Games, .278 BA (5/18), 2 HR, 5 RBI, 4 BB, 4 SO

  • Ben Ross is one of the Twins’ newly draft picks, and he’s adjusted well to pro baseball. In 27 at-bats, he’s hitting .222, with two home runs and an OPS of .863. Ross was a polished hitter in college and should see similar success in the minors.

Pierson Ohl, SP
1 Game, 1-0, 7.0 IP, 0.00 ERA, 2 H, 0 BB, 7 SO

  • Pierson Ohl entered the game out of relief for Mike Paredes in the third inning and was virtually unhittable. Ohl struck out seven and only gave up two hits in seven innings of work.

5 Games, .300 BA (6/20), 2 HR, 4 RBI, 1 BB, 6 SO, 1 SB

Matt Wallner, #5, OF
6 Games, .182 BA (4/22), 1 RBI, 5 BB, 8 SO

Simeon Woods-Richardson, #6, SP
1 Game, 3.0 IP, 9.00 ERA, 4 H, 0 BB, 4 SO, 1 HR

Marco Raya, #7, SP
1 Game, 0-1, 2.0 IP, 22.50 ERA, 5 H, 2 BB, 1 SO, 2 HR

1 Game, 5.2 IP, 3.18 ERA, 7 H, 0 BB, 7 SO

4 Games, .188 BA (3/16), 2 RBI, 1 BB, 4 SO

5 Games, .364 BA (8/22), 2 RBI, 1 BB, 3 SO, 6 SB

5 Games, .353 BA (6/17), 3 HR, 8 RBI, 3 BB, 8 SO
