Let's Talk Twins

Twins: Minor League Monday (7/4)

Happy 4th of July! The Minnesota Twins may want to call Jake Cave soon, as he’s been having an excellent season for the St. Paul Saints. Edouard Julien is another player who’s been casually raking in Wichita.

Check to see who else made the list:

Top Performers:
AAA

Jake Cave, CF
6 Games, .409 BA (9/22), 3 HR, 5 RBI, 2 BB, 5 SO, 1 SB

  • Cave is having a really good season and saw his streak of reaching base safely for 45 consecutive games end on July 3. If the Twins need outfielder help, Cave should be the next guy they call.

Cole Sands, #15, SP
1 Game, 1-0, 5.0 IP, 1.80 ERA, 4 H, 3 BB, 7 SO, 1 HR

  • It’s nice to see Cole Sands do well in Triple-A, especially after watching him struggle for the Twins earlier this season. If he pitches for Minnesota moving forward, it’s probably best he comes out of the bullpen.
AA

Edouard Julien, #28, SS
6 Games, .409 BA (9/22), 3 HR, 8 RBI, 5 BB, 5 SO

  • Julien is one of the most slept-on prospects in the Twins system. Despite that, he hit three home runs this week, including a seven RBI effort on June 29.

Andrew Bechtold, C
4 Games, .313 BA (5/16), 1 HR, 2 RBI, 1 BB, 2 SO

  • Andrew Bechtold is another catcher in the Twins system that hasn’t shown much offensive upside. He’s been an average bat at the plate with little power. However, he’s started to show a little more pop over the last two seasons.

Louie Varland, #13, SP
1 Game, 5.1 IP, 3.38 ERA, 5 H, 2 BB, 9 SO, 1 HR

  • Louie Varland continues to impress in Double-A and could be promoted to Triple-A soon. The Minnesota native is a high strikeout pitcher with good command of the ball.

Cody Laweryson, RHP
2 Games, 1-0, 4.1 IP, 0.00 ERA, 0 H, 3 BB, 5 SO

  • Cody Laweryson was recently promoted to Double-A and is yet to give up a run in 6.1 innings pitched. The 23-year-old has posted an ERA of 2.18 in 19 games this season.
High-A

David Festa, #30, SP
1 Game, 1-0, 5.2 IP, 3.18 ERA, 5 H, 2 BB, 7 SO

  • David Festa is quietly doing his thing for the Cedar Rapids Kernels after starting the year with the Fort Myers Mighty Mussels. In 12 games, he’s posted an ERA of 1.94. If he can go deeper in ballgames, that will go a long way.
Low-A

Keoni Cavaco, #20, SS
4 Games, .308 BA (4/13), 1 HR, 1 RBI, 2 SO

  • After another disappointing start to the 2022 minor league season, Keoni Cavaco has slowly started to look better at the plate. Over the last two months, he hit .250 in May and .246 in June. However, he’s raised his slugging percentage by nearly 200 points.

Dillon Tatum, C
5 Games, .313 BA (5/16), 3 HR, 3 RBI, 2 BB, 5 SO

  • Dillon Tatum was the final pick in the 2021 MLB Draft, and you can never have enough catching depth. The former UC Irvine standout has struggled in his early major league career, but he did slap three home runs this week.

Regi Grace, RHP
1 Game, 3.0 IP, 0.00 ERA, 4 H, 0 BB, 6 SO

  • The 6-foot-2 right-handed thrower has struggled in his early career, posting an ERA of 4.00 through 45 games. However, on June 30, he pitched three innings and struck out six.
