Let's Talk Twins

Twins: Minor League Monday (7/18)

The Minnesota Twins watched the Wichita Wind Surge put up 64 runs in an offensive clinic this week. Realistically, you could put their entire lineup in the ‘Top Performers’ section.

Check to see who else made the list:

Top Performers:
AAA

Jermaine Palacios, #26, SS
4 Games, .385 BA (5/13), 2 RBI, 2 BB, 3 SO, 1 SB

  • The Twins know what they’re getting with Jermaine Palacios. He takes good at-bats, and he’s smart defensively.

Drew Strotman, #16, SP
1 Game, 2.0 IP, 0.00 ERA, 5 H, 2 BB, 2 SO

  • Drew Strotman has been playing much better as of late. He had an ERA of 9.72 at the end of May, but he’s only given up one earned run over his last six outings.
AA

Christian Encarnacion-Strand, #24, SS
6 Games, .462 BA (12/26), 5 HR, 15 RBI, 3 BB, 5 SO, 1 SB

  • Christian Encarnacion-Strand hit for the cycle on July 17, which was further proof of his offensive skill set. The former fourth-round draft pick in last year’s draft has hit 23 home runs, with an OPS of 1.005.

Chris Williams, C
6 Games, .462 BA (12/26), 6 HR, 20 RBI, 2 BB, 4 SO

  • This might be the most impressive performance I’ve covered since starting Minor League Monday. Chris Williams accounted for 20 of the Wind Surge’s 64 runs. Not only did he hit six home runs, but he combined for 33 total bases.

DaShawn Keirsey Jr., CF
6 Games, .577 BA (15/26), 1 HR, 8 RBI, 3 SO, 4 SB

  • DaShawn Keirsey Jr. went 5-for-5 on July 12 and 4-for-4 on July 15. The Arkansas Travelers had no answer for the centerfielder, as his .577 batting average was evidence.

Cole Sturgeon, OF
6 Games, .409 BA (9/22), 1 HR, 3 RBI, 3 BB, 5 SO

  • Cole Sturgeon has made a few appearances on Minor League Monday, but the 30-year-old has an OPS of .677 and a batting average of .238.
High-A

Yunior Severino, 2B
4 Games, .273 BA (3/11), 1 HR, 5 RBI, 5 BB, 3 SO

  • Yunior Severino has been injured most of the season and hasn’t looked like that top-30 prospect (Twins’ system) he once was. This week, he knocked in five runs and took five walks.

Cade Povich, #22, SP
1 Game, 1-0, 6.0 IP, 0.00 ERA, 3 H, 1 BB, 10 SO

  • Cade Povich has been really good this season and will be in the Twins’ starting rotation within the next year or two. The 22-year-old has posted a 12.53 K/9 and a BB/9 of 2.71.
Low-A

Noah Cardenas, C
6 Games, .409 BA (9/22), 3 HR, 5 RBI, 2 BB, 6 SO

  • Noah Cardenas hasn’t had the offensive season he’d like, but this week he showed off some power and his ability to get base hits. The former UCLA Bruin isn’t known for his offense but rather his defense. If he can be an average bat, then he’ll have a future in the big leagues.

Carlos Aguiar, CF
6 Games, .435 BA (10/23), 3 HR, 7 RBI, 1 BB, 10 SO, 1 SB

  • For a centerfielder, Carlos Aguiar has shown a lot of pop. In 76 at-bats, the 20-year-old has hit six home runs and posted an OPS of .966. Aguiar has been in the Twins system since 2017, developing in the lower clubs.

Jaylen Nowlin, #22, SP
1 Game, 4.0 IP, 0.00 ERA, 4 H, 0 BB, 7 SO

  • I wrote about Jaylen Nowlin back in June after he only gave up one earned run in 11.2 innings. This month, he’s given up eight in 10.2 innings. Hopefully, his July 13 performance can push him in the right direction again.
