Let's Talk Twins

Twins: Minor League Monday (6/13)

This wasn’t the best week for the Minnesota Twins farm system, but the St. Paul Saints made up for it with some great performances from Alex Kirilloff and a walk-off home run from Spencer Steer.

Check out who else made the list:

Top Performers:
AAA

Spencer Steer, #9, SS
3 Games, .385 (5/30), 2 HR, 4 RBI, 2 BB, 2 SO

  • Steer smacked a couple of home runs, including a walk-off HR on June 9 against the Rochester Red Wings. There are question marks about his fit defensively in the long run, but he has experience playing multiple positions.

Alex Kirilloff, CF
6 Games, .375 BA (9/24), 3 HR, 7 RBI, 1 BB, 6 SO

  • We’ve talked a lot about Kirilloff on here. There should be no reason he’s not up with the Twins.

Jake Cave, CF
6 Games, .348 BA (8/23), 1 HR, 5 RBI, 4 BB, 9 SO

  • On May 17, Jake Cave was hitting .204 and wasn’t finding any sort of groove. The next day, he cranked a home run and has been getting hot at the plate ever since. He’s raised his batting average to .261.

Tim Beckham, SS
4 Games, .529 BA (9/17), 1 HR, 9 RBI, 2 BB, 4 SO, 2 SB

  • Since joining the St. Paul Saints, Tim Beckham has been incredible. He’s hitting .463, with an OPS of 1.347. If he continues to play like this, there might be a team that starts showing interest in the former No. 1 overall pick
AA

Louie Varland, #14, SP
1 Game, 1-0, 6.0 IP, 0.00 ERA, 3 H, 0 BB, 9 SO

  • Louie Varland deserves to be called up to St. Paul. The Minnesota native has looked great, and we may see him in a Twins uniform by next season. This year he’s 5-1 with an ERA of 3.24.

Melvi Acosta, RHP
2 Games, 4.2 IP, 0.00 ERA, 1 H, 2 BB, 4 SO

  • Melvi Acosta is a 27-year-old reliever in Double-A, and it’s likely we won’t ever see him make his MLB debut. For him to stick, he’ll have to have better success against right-handed hitters (.249 batting average).
High-A

Christian Encarnacion-Strand, #27, SS
6 Games, .250 BA (6/24), 3 HR, 8 RBI, 2 BB, 7 SO

  • Christian Encarnacion-Strand got off to a hot start this season but cooled off in May. This week he found his groove, blasting three home runs – one of which was a grand slam. He’s a player to keep an eye on in the Twins system.

Seth Gray, 3B
6 Games, .318 BA (7/22), 2 HR, 7 RBI, 2 BB, 6 SO

  • Seth Gray has been a little disappointing since getting drafted in the fourth round of the 2019 MLB Draft. Despite having a .235 batting average this season, he’s done a good job getting on base (.364).

Sawyer Gipson-Long, SP
1 Game, 1-0, 1.50 ERA, 3 H, 1 BB, 6 SO, 1 HR

  • The Twins selected Sawyer Gipson-Long in the sixth round of the 2019 MLB Draft, and he’s been solid ever since. Neither righties (.204) nor lefties (.170) have had much success off him this season.
Low-A

Travis Adams, SP
1 Game, 0-1, 2.00 ERA, 6 H, 2 BB, 11 SO

  • Travis Adams is a solid pitcher who will go out there every fifth day and give you five innings. He’s got great command of the ball, striking out 50 and walking only nine. Opponents are only hitting .156 off him in nine games.

Jaylen Nowlin, SP
1 Game, 0-1, 2.00 ERA, 6 H, 2 BB, 11 SO

  • The Twins selected Jaylen Nowlin in the 19th round of the 2021 MLB Draft, and he’s struggled early as a reliever. In 12 games, he’s posted an ERA of 5.11, and he’s struggled to get lefties out (.313 batting average).
