Twins: Minor League Monday (5/9)
A lot of the Minnesota Twins’ top prospects were promoted to the big leagues, which is a great thing. However, that causes Minor League Monday to lose some flare. On the bright side, we’re able to see some new faces.
There was encouraging play from some of the struggling players, and this might be a step in the right direction. So, let’s get right into it.
Top Performers:
AAA
Mark Contreras, OF
6 Games, .381 BA (8/21), 1 HR, 4 RBI, 4 BB, 8 SO, 1 SB
- Mark Contreras may get his opportunity at the big leagues if the Twins continue to catch the injury bug. He’s a player you should keep an eye on because he can play multiple positions in the outfield, and he brings speed and power to the plate.
Elliot Soto, SS
6 Games, .286 BA (6/21), 1 HR, 6 RBI, 5 BB, 6 SO, 1 SB
- Elliot Soto is a veteran player who’s been around the block. At 32, he may never get a chance with the Twins because Royce Lewis and Carlos Correa are ahead of him on the priority list. However, Let’s give it up to Soto for the great week.
Ian Hamilton, RHP
1 Game, 0.00 ERA, 5 IP, 1 H, 2 BB, 9 SO
- If you pay attention to the Twins closely, then Ian Hamilton is a name you’re familiar with. He’s a guy who could help Minnesota out if they need relief pitching this season.
AA
Spencer Steer, #10, SS
5 Games, .400 (8/20), 3 HR, 8 RBI, 5 SO, 1 SB
- Spencer Steer has been one of the best players in the Twins farm system this season. The former Oregon Duck star has been hitting .320, with four home runs and 21 runs batted in. He’s had success against both lefties (.444) and righties (.274), but left-handed pitchers don’t want to face him right now.
Matt Wallner, #11, RF
5 Games, .500 BA (8/16), 2 HR, 8 RBI, 3 BB, 4 SO, 1 SB
- Matt Wallner got off to a cold start, but he’s starting to turn things around. On April 29, he was hitting .161, but over his last seven games, he’s hitting .458 (11/24) with four home runs.
Austin Schulfer, RHP
2 Games, 0.00 ERA, 2.1 IP, 1 H, 4 SO
- Austin Schulfer is a Wisconsin native and was the Twins 19th round pick in 2018. In nine games this year, he’s yet to give up a run and has 18 strikeouts.
High-A
John Stankiewicz, SP
1 Game, 1-0, 5.0 IP, 0.00 ERA, 7 SO
- This is not John Stankiewicz’s first appearance on Minor League Monday. This season he’s 4-0 with an ERA of 0.68. I think it’s safe to say that he will be a popular guy this season.
Brent Headrick, SP
1 Game, 1-0, 6.0 IP, 0.00 ERA, 1 H, 1 BB, 10 SO
- Brent Headrick is another player who’s pitched well this season. He owns a 3-1 record, with an ERA of 1.90. He’s had a lot of success against right-handed hitters (.077 BA), but lefties (.222 BA) are not having much fun either.
Bradley Hanner, RHP
2 Games, 4.0 IP, 0.00 ERA, 1 H, 1 BB, 6 SO
- For a reliever, Bradley Hanner is already racking up the win total. He’s 3-0, with an ERA of 0.69 in 13.0 innings of work. With his size at 6-foot-4, the 23-year-old will have a lot of success if he continues to build off these performances.
Low-A
Noah Miller, #9, SS
6 Games, .478 (11/23), 1 HR, 5 RBI, 4 BB, 6 SO, 3 SB
- Noah Miller had a cold start to the season (.197 BA in April), but since then he’s been heating up. During the month of May, he’s hitting .478 and is looking like a former top draft pick.
Jake Rucker, 3B
6 Games, .455 (10/22), 3 RBI, 4 BB, 1 SO, 3 SB
- Jake Rucker is an offense-first player, but we haven’t seen that just yet. In 148 career at-bats, the Twins’ seventh-round pick is hitting .250. However, he could build off this performance and have similar success as he did at the University of Tennessee.
Top Prospects
Royce Lewis, #1, SS
3 Games, .250 BA (3/12), 2 BB, 2 SO, 3 SB
Austin Martin, #2, SS
