Twins: Carlos Correa “plans” to opt of his contract, so what’s next?
The Minnesota Twins know this day will come. Carlos Correa “plans” to opt out of his contract, despite there being two years left on the table. However, the two-time All-Star wants to remain in Minnesota, so what’s next?
From day one, Correa has reiterated that he’d like to stay in Minnesota long-term. The former No. 1 overall pick has said all of the right things, but everyone knew he would opt out of his contract at the end of the season.
But we all know you know the game enough to know what my decision is going to be like. And I love this team. I love this organization. My wife loves it here, loves it in Minnesota. Loves all the wives. She is very happy there. My wife’s happiness is my happiness. If everything is good at home, then it reflects on the field.

Like every player, Correa wants to be paid and have long-term security. Playing on a one-or two-year deal is a risky because it’s unpredictable if a player will have a down season or worse yet, get seriously injured.
Correa played 136 games for the Twins and put-up good numbers. He finished with a batting average of .291, with 22 home runs and 64 runs batted in. He also recorded a wins above replacement of 5.4, which ranks 28th in baseball.
Defensively, he was as good as advertised. In 472 chances, he only caused eight errors, and when he wasn’t on the field, the Twins’ defense was lacking.
The only thing that really hurt Correa’s season was his inability to come through when the Twins needed him most. Historically, he has a knack for shining in big moments, but during his tenure with the Twins, we rarely got to witness it.
If the Twins are serious about contending in 2023 or in the near future, then paying Correa what he wants will be in their best interest. He’s one of the best shortstops in the game and makes this team a better ball club.
How often can you say a premier MVP candidate wants to stay/come to Minnesota? Not often. If they don’t re-sign him, they’re unlikely to use that money elsewhere.
Correa has stated he wants to stay in Minnesota and that he will have conversations with the front office. If he is playing for another team in 2023, then it’s because the front office didn’t meet his requirements.
I’ve continuously stated that I believe the Twins will come to an agreement with Correa. It should be known that both parties have expressed a mutual interest. We will continue to report on Correa’s contract front here at Let’s Talk Minnesota Sports.
