The Minnesota Twins sign three international prospects

The Minnesota Twins agreed to terms with three international prospects: Yasser Mercedes (OF), Yilber Herrera (SS) and Bryan Acuña (SS).

Mercedes’s deal is worth $1.7 million and is MLB’s No. 17 international prospect. He’s a five-tool athlete that brings a lot of upside. However, being only 17 years old, it’s likely we don’t see him until 2027. At that time he would be 22, but it’s hard to see him cracking the seams that soon.

Here’s how MLB grades his skillset:

  • Hit: 50
  • Power: 50
  • Run: 55
  • Arm: 50
  • Field: 55
  • Overall: 55

This isn’t to say that he’s going to be knocking on the door as one of the next premier outfielders, but there’s a lot to like about him.

Herrera’s deal is worth $700,000 and is MLB’s No. 35 prospect. Unlike Mercedes, Herrera isn’t a power hitter and does the bulk of his offensive production with base hits. However, he is a better defensive player than he is offensively. If he becomes a .270 hitter with a high on-base percentage, then he’s going to have a long MLB career.

Despite being MLB’s No. 39 international prospect, this acquisition might be the most intriguing one. While Ronald Acuña isn’t going anywhere, the Twins have found a way to snag his brother. It’s hard to see Bryan Acuña reaching his brother’s ceiling, but there are always going to be eyes on his development.

Acuña’s deal is worth $650,000, and projects to be a contact hitter, with upside in the field. Hopefully, his baseball genes allow him to have a successful career because that will help the Twins out significantly.
