Should the Minnesota Timberwolves sign a center or keep the roster spot open?
The Minnesota Timberwolves signed Josh Minott to a 4-year deal, which leaves one roster spot remaining. Should the front office enter the season with 14 players under contract or sign a center?
Last season we saw Sachin Gupta keep a roster spot open and eventually used it at the end of the season on Greg Monroe.
After trading for Rudy Gobert, Minnesota may want to add another big. Naz Reid is currently the only backup, with Kyle Anderson and Taurean Prince available for small ball lineups. If there’s an injury or foul trouble between Karl-Anthony Towns and Gobert, then Minnesota may find itself in a tough situation.
As KAT said, most likely it will be him in foul trouble:
The case for it:
The case for signing another big is pretty simple. After Gobert and Towns, there’s relatively zero size on this roster.
- PF: Towns, Anderson, Prince, Minott
- C: Gobert, Reid
Reid is a good player, but he’s matchup dependent and struggles against bigger centers. However, he’s done well when other teams play small. Minnesota will mix and match a variety of lineups, and Gobert/Towns will not always share the floor.
Who are some potential free agent players they could sign?
The only realistic one is Cousins, and the Timberwolves have shown interest in him according to KSTPs Darren Wolfson.
Cousins played last season for the Denver Nuggets’ where Tim Connelly was the President of Basketball Operations. Could Connelly bring in another one of his former players like he has with Austin Rivers and Bryn Forbes?
It looks like Boogie may want to come to Minnesota as well.
If the Timberwolves are to bring in another player, they’d likely sign Cousins. At 6-foot-10 and 270 pounds, the former Kentucky Wildcat would bring much-needed size off the bench.
The case against it:
leaving a roster spot open isn’t a bad thing. This would allow the Timberwolves to figure out what this team needs as the season progresses.
Like I stated earlier, the Wolves left a roster spot open and used it on Monroe. This proved to be the right move for Minnesota because size was their biggest weakness, and adding Moose covered up some of those holes.
If the Timberwolves were to wait, they could capitalize on the buyout market once the dust settles with Kevin Durant and Donovan Mitchell. Minnesota could likely find a competitive player that has more left in the tank than someone like Cousins or Aldridge.
Of course, this is no guarantee, and waiting on this could backfire. There’s no right or wrong answer, and there are plenty of avenues this front office could take.
Minnesota has a lot of depth, and signing someone like Cousins would solidify a deep 15-man roster. Should they wait and leave the roster spot open? Let us know in the comment section below.
