Let's Talk Twins

Nick Gordon has been one of the most underrated Twins players this season

The Minnesota Twins have received production from almost every player in the lineup, but Nick Gordon has quietly been one of the ballclub’s best players. Here’s a look at the value he’s provided on a day-to-day basis.

Gordon is having himself a season and deserves a lot of credit for the Twins’ success. Sure, Minnesota has underperformed, and they’re not in first place, but they’d be a lot worse if he wasn’t playing.

The Twins selected Gordon with the fifth pick in the 2014 MLB Draft. It took him a while to reach the majors, but a lot of that had to do with injuries and a stomach issue. The former Olympia High School standout entered the 2021 season weighing about 160 pounds but has since increased his strength and weight. Gordon has stated in the past that he’s hoping to get close to 195 pounds next year.

We’ve seen what a healthy Gordon can be or even become. The added strength has allowed him to create more pop in his bat, and he’s hitting the ball harder than ever. This season he’s hit six home runs and driven in 36 RBIs. He’s also smacked 24 doubles and four triples, showing both power and speed.

Gordon has increased his barrel rate by 3.5 percent since his rookie year.

Every rookie struggles, but his play has been night and day since last year.

  • 2021: .240/.292/.355, 4 HR, 23 RBI, 80 OPS+
  • 2022: .278/.322/.427, 6 HR, 36 RBI, 115 OPS+

He’s getting on base more and has drastically increased his OPS numbers. Since the All-Star break, he’s hitting .299 and has provided 23 RBIs.

Not only has he been great offensively, but his defense has been valuable.

He might not be elite defensively, but he is a good defender. He’s also playing multiple positions for the Twins and filling in where they need him. That includes shortstop, second base, left and centerfield.

Coming out of high school, Gordon was primarily a shortstop, but as his career has progressed, it’s clear he’s a better outfielder.

Offensively and defensively, he’s provided a lot for the Twins. This doesn’t even account for the good vibes/energy he brings to the clubhouse. It’s evident they all love him, including Byron Buxton.

Gordon has been one of the most valuable Twins players this season. Not only has he produced offensively, but he’s provided solid defense and energy for this ball club.
