Let's Talk Twins

Minnesota Twins: Grading rounds 11-20 of MLB Draft

The MLB Draft came to an end on July 13, and the Minnesota Twins selected 10 more players in the final rounds. Here’s how they graded out:

Brandon Birdsell – RHP

Before playing for the Texas Tech Red Raiders in 2021, Brandon Birdsell played for Texas A&M and a junior college. This season he finished with a record of 4-1 and an ERA of 3.06. Birdsell didn’t have a lot of strikeouts, only recording eight and nine each in two of his games.

One positive about his game is his ability to limit the long ball, only allowing four all season. Minnesota found a nice player in the 11th round.

Grade: A

Kyler Fedko – OF

Kyler Fedko was the only outfielder the Twins took in 20 rounds of the draft. Fedko played right field for Connecticut, which may be a positional need long-term with Max Kepler’s future in Minnesota uncertain.

After a disappointing first season for the Huskies, he bounced back and hit .392 and .398 in two seasons – including an OPS over one in both of those seasons.

Grade: A-

David Festa – RHP

Twins’ fans have to be excited about David Festa bouncing back after a rough 2020. He went 1-3, with an ERA of 7.53. In 15 (11 starts) appearances this season, he went 6-4 and lowered his ERA significantly to an even 2.00.

There were four appearances in which he shutout the other team – two of those being starts. Much like Birdsell, he does give up many home runs, giving up five all season.

Grade: B+

Pierson Ohl – RHP

Pierson Ohl had a great 2021 campaign, finishing with a record of 10-2 and an ERA of 2.60. according to GCU’s athletics site, he ranked third in the nation with the fewest walks per nine innings. As well as a 17-to-1 strikeout-to-walk ratio.

Ohl will give up a lot of hits, but he doesn’t allow many runs. The most he gave up in one start was six, but for the most part, he kept that number under two.

Grade: A

Mikey Perez – SS

Mikey Perez isn’t the best offensive player, but he will make up for it on the defensive end. On defense, he committed five errors in 57 games – a fielding percentage of .976.

On offense, he batted .231 with zero home runs. He did finish with an OBP of .347, which brings a little more optimism that his offense may improve.

Grade: D+

Johnathan Lavallee – RHP

Despite Johnathan Lavallee not playing against any ranked teams, he did have an impressive season. He earned a lot of accolades in 2021 and two of those were First Team All-American and Big West Co-Pitcher of the Year.

This season he finished 8-1 and had an ERA of 1.89.

Grade: B+

Dylan Neuse – 2B

In today’s game, if a player can play multiple positions, they’re that much more valuable. Dylan Neuse is listed as a second baseman, but played 18 games in college as a centerfield and once at third base.

While he might not hit a lot of home runs. he did bat .281 in his junior season – down a bit from his freshman and sophomore season (.298, .355). He gets on base a lot, finishing with an OBP of .440 and minimizes his strikeouts. He also stole 41 bases in three seasons and finished 2021 with a fielding percentage of .981 and one error

Grade: A

Mike Paredes – RHP

Mike Paredes is an undersized pitcher, listed at 5-foot-11 and 185 pounds. He did finish with a record of 4-0, but his ERA was on the higher side of 5.59. In 77.1 innings of work, he gave up 15 home runs and had 48 total earned runs.

His opponents finished with a batting average of .271 as well. Moving forward, the bullpen might be the best option for Paredes.

Grade: C

Jaylen Nowlin – LHP

Jaylen Nowlin will probably become a part of the Twins’ bullpen. In eight appearances he logged 18 innings and recorded 28 strikeouts. He did finish 3-0 and had an ERA of 3.00.

Grade: C+

Dillon Tatum – C

Dillon Tatum plays well on both sides of the ball. On offense, his batting splits were .278/.401/.684. He does have good power, hitting 15 home runs on just 133 at-bats. He will need to improve his strikeout rate if he wants to be a more effective hitter.

On defense, he nearly threw out 50 percent of the runners who attempted to steal on him (7-of-19). He finished with 5 errors and a fielding percentage of .982
