BREAKING: Karl-Anthony Towns signs a 4-year/$214 M extension
Jon Krawczynski of The Athletic reported that the Minnesota Timberwolves locked up Karl-Anthony Towns to a 4-year/$214 million extension late Thursday night.
Towns is the longest-tenured player on the Wolves roster and has continued to show his loyalty to a franchise that sometimes wasn’t deserving of it. KAT was selected No. 1 overall in the 2015 NBA Draft and has been dominant ever since he stepped on the court.
In seven seasons with the Timberwolves, he’s been a three-time All-Star, two-time All-NBA player, and won Rookie of the Year in 2015-16.
There isn’t much risk in giving Towns all that money. He’s still young and one of the best players in the league. Someone would trade for him if it got to that point. The salary cap will continue to rise, so him making over $50 million a year isn’t as alarming as it may seem.
Last year, he averaged 24.6 points, 9.8 rebounds, 3.6 assists, 1.1 blocks and 1.0 steals. He also shot 52.9 percent from the field, 41.0 from 3 and 82.2 from the line.
Winning All-NBA Third Team was important to Towns, as it allowed him to earn a lot more money this offseason. Locking him up for the next four seasons gives this franchise a path to success, which is something they’ve been searching for, for many years.
Tim Connelly had this to say about Towns:
“I hope he’s here forever. I hope we have the type of team success that would allow us to look up and see Karl’s jersey being hung up in the rafters.”
Minnesota only has one jersey in the rafters (Malik Sealy), and it feels like Towns will be the next one. The Kevin Garnett-Timberwolves drama could get dragged out for the next 10 years, but maybe Marc Lore and Alex Rodriguez can get something done soon.
Last season Minnesota secured their second playoff birth in nearly two decades after going 46-36. If they have a strong offseason, they could be looking at landing a home-court advantage in next year’s playoffs.
Nonetheless, Minnesota will need to figure out its next move. Will they trade D’Angelo Russell? Or will they have a quiet offseason and bring in one more player on the MLE? Who knows, but one thing is for sure, and that’s Towns remaining in Minnesota for the foreseeable future.
