Last week the Minnesota Twins minor league teams saw a lot of great performances. However, that wasn’t nearly the case this week for the St. Paul Saints (0-6), Wichita Wind Surge (3-3), Cedar Rapids Kernels (3-3) and Fort Myers Mighty Mussels (2-4), combining for an 8-16 record.

Top Performers:

AAA

Drew Maggi, IF
5 Games, .429 BA (6/14), 4 RBI, 1 BB, 3 SO 

• Drew Maggi only played in five games but had an at-bat in four of them. Despite playing fewer games for St. Paul, the versatile infielder led the team in RBIs this week.

Joe Ryan, #6, SP
1 Game, 5.0 IP, 1.80 ERA, 4 H, 1 BB, 8 SO

• I have a suspicion that Joe Ryan will be one of the ‘Top Performers’ every week. However, that’s only the case if he doesn’t get called up in September. The Twins could use Ryan in the starting rotation, and in two games for the Saints, he’s pitched a total of nine innings and recorded 17 strikeouts.

Jovani Moran, #26, LHP
2 Games, 4.0 IP, 2.25 ERA, 4 H, 4 BB, 8 SO, 1 HR

• Jovani Moran’s time will come either this season or next. Minnesota needs help out of the bullpen, and he could be a potential candidate to get called up in September. The 24-year-old has a 4-1 record and an ERA of 2.39 between Double and Triple-A.

AA

Austin Martin, #2, SS
6 Games, .280 BA (7/25), 2 HR, 7 RBI, 2 BB, 12 SO

• Austin Martin has cooled off since joining the Twins’ Double-A affiliate. His best attributes include getting base hits and taking walks. He’s not someone who’s going to hit for power, but this week, the former No. 5 overall pick smashed two home runs on back-to-back nights.

Jordan Gore, RHP
3 Games, 4.0 IP, 0.00 ERA, 0 H, 0 BB, 5 SO

• Jordan Gore appeared in three relief appearances for the Wind Surge and didn’t allow an earned run or hit. That’s now six consecutive outings in which he’s done this feat.

High-A

Wander Javier, SS
4 Games, .462 BA (6/13), 2 HR, 5 RBI, 2 SO

• Wander Javier was a highly touted prospect at one point for the Twins but hasn’t had as much success as he’d like. This week, he showed everyone what he’s capable of, hitting two home runs and hitting over .400.

Sawyer Gipson-Long, SP
1 Game, 1-0, 6.0 IP, 0.00 ERA, 6 H, 0 BB, 9 SO

• Sawyer Gipson-Long has been one of the more impressive pitchers as of late for Minnesota. Recently, he got the call-up to Cedar Rapids and is having success. Since joining the team, he’s 2-1 and has an ERA of 2.12.

Low-A

Christian Encarnacion-Strand, 3B
6 Games, .292 BA (7/24), 2 HR, 5 RBI, 8 SO

• The Twins’ fourth-round pick out of Oklahoma State played his first week in the minors and played well. The 21-year-old came into Fort Myers and hit two home runs and batted in five RBIs. He was a great hitter in college, and it looks like he’s carrying that over.

Will Holland, 3B
6 Games, .444 BA (8/18), 3 RBI, 2 BB, 5 SO, 2 SB

• Will Holland started the week hitting .179 and boosted his batting average to .203. While he’d like that to be higher, he’s turning the corner and heading in the right direction.
