Let's Talk Twins

Minnesota Twins: Minor league report (8/3)

It’s minor league Tuesday! The St. Paul Saints and the Wichita Wind Surge both had an offensive week – each tallying double digit scores twice. The Fort Myers Mighty Mussels had a difficult week, getting rained out on July 28, and playing a doubleheader the next day. They also dealt with COVID-19 and have missed their last three games. As of now, it appears they’re still planning on playing their series against Dunedin Blue Jays on Aug. 3.

Top Performers:
AAA

Jose Miranda, #19, 3B
5 Games, .409 BA (9/22), 1 HR, 2 RBI, 2 BB, 5 SO

  • Jose Miranda gets the nod again this week as one of the top performers. He didn’t hit three home runs like last week, but he continued to get on base, hitting over .400. Miranda continues to show why he should be called up to the majors soon.

Rob Refsnyder, CF
4 Games, .500 BA (8/16), 2 HR, 5 RBI, 4 BB

  • Remember Rob Refsnyder? He joined the Saints for a rehab assignment on July 20 and has played well. In nine games, he’s hitting .406, with three home runs and eight runs batted in.

Jimmy Kerrigan, CF
6 Games, .391 BA (9/23), 2 HR, 8 RBI, 2 BB, 6 SO

  • Jimmy Kerrigan helped the Saints’ offense this week, hitting two home runs and contributing eight runs batted in. Kerrigan is batting .250 this season, with 12 home runs.

Matt Shoemaker, SP
1 Game, 7.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ERA, 2 BB, 6 SO

  • Matt Shoemaker has had a lot of success for St. Paul. In four games, he’s 1-0, with an ERA of 1.80. It’s unlikely Minnesota calls him back up to start a game, but maybe there’s hope for him out of the bullpen.
AA

Spencer Steer, #28, SS
5 Games, .444 BA (8/18), 2 HR, 7 RBI, 3 BB, 4 SO

  • Spencer Steer is now the Twins’ No. 28 prospect after the MLB Trade Deadline. Despite falling back two slots in the top-30, he finished the week hitting over .400 and batted seven runs in. Steer is now batting .257 and has hit 18 home runs.

BJ Boyd, LF
6 Games, .429 (12/28), 2 HR, 10 RBI, 1 BB, 6 SO

  • Long time minor league player, BJ Boyd, had a nice week for Wichita as well. He arguably had a better week than Steer by adding two more runs batted in.

Chris Nunn, LHP
2 Games, 3.2 IP, 1 R, 2.45 ERA, 4 H, 2 BB, 7 SO

  • In two games, Chris Nunn struck out seven of the nine batters he faced and only gave up one earned run. Nunn looked dominant and helped the Wind Surge out of the bullpen.
High-A

Michael Helman, #23, SS
6 Games, .435 BA (10/23), 1 HR, 2 RBI, 3 BB, 1 SO, 2 SB

  • If Michael Helman added a few more RBIs, then he might have had the best for the Twins’ minor league system. He batted .435, with one home run and two stolen bases.

Erik Manoah Jr., SP
3 Games, 3.2 IP, 1 R, 2.45 ERA, 0 H, 2 BB, 8 SO

  • Erik Manoah Jr. had a few dominant outings out of the bullpen for the Cedar Rapids Kernels. In almost four innings of work, the reliever struck out eight and gave up zero hits.

Zach Featherstone, LHP
3 Games, 4.0 IP, 2 H, 0.00 ERA, 2 BB, 7 SO

  • Zach Featherstone is making his second consecutive appearance this week, striking out seven in four innings and finishing with an ERA of zero.
Low-A

Sawyer Gipson-Long, SP
1 Game, 1-0, 7.0 IP, 0.00 ERA, 1, R, 3 H, 1 BB, 9 SO

  • Sawyer Gipson-Long had another great start and was named the Low-A Southeast Pitcher of the Week. He’s now 5-4 and has an ERA of 4.55 this season.

Bobby Milacki, RHP
1 Game, 0.00 ERA, 3.0 IP, 0 H, 0 BB, 3 SO

  • Unlike Manoah Jr. and Featherstone, Bobby Milacki dominated without the strikeouts. In three innings, he didn’t record a run or hit.

Steven Cruz, RHP
1 Game, 0.00 ERA, 2.0 IP, 0 H, 1 BB, 4 SO

  • Steven Cruz looked as dominated as Milacki, but recorded four strikeouts in the six outs registered.
