Twins: One New Year’s resolution for the front office
2022 is in the rearview, and hopefully, 2023 treats the Minnesota Twins better. Most people come up with New Year’s resolutions, and for the Twins front office, there’s should be to spend more money/make an effort to improve this roster.
This has been a disappointing offseason, but the good news is that it’s not over yet. The big-name free agents are off the board, but the front office can still make moves. They can add position players who may not cost a lot and trade for a starting pitcher.
Here are some position players the front office should target:
None of these names are going to wow fans, but they still carry value to a team.
Cruz is going to be 43 next season, and last year he was not the same player he once was. In 2022, he hit 10 home runs and had an OPS+ of 90. Adding him would mostly be a good vibes-only signing, and it would give the fans something to cheer about.
As for the other guys, they would provide veteran leadership and a solid bat in the lineup. Gurriel didn’t have the best season last year, but he could still be of value.
The biggest impact player this front office can add is through a trade. Unfortunately, that means the Twins would have to part with a fan-favorite player and a couple of really good prospects.
The front office needs to add a clear-cut No. 1 starting pitcher. Could they bring in someone like Corbin Burnes, Brandon Woodruff, Zac Gallen, Pablo López, Drew Rasmussen or Tyler Glasnow?
All of those pitchers would cost a pretty penny, but they would drastically improve the starting rotation. The Twins failed to make moves, so they have to face the consequences and pay up in other ways.
The front office needs to be more aggressive in 2023. They owe it to the fans because we’ve been through enough. The Twins have a talented roster, and they could make some noise this season with the right moves.
