Let's Talk Twins

Twins: Minor League Report (9/12)

The Minnesota Twins’ top prospects didn’t perform like they’re accustomed to, but Jordan Balazovic has started to come around as of late. Hopefully, this is a sign of better things to come.

Check to see who else was a ‘Top Performer’ of the week:

Top Performers:
AAA

Mark Contreras, OF
5 Games, .300 BA (6/20), 2 HR, 4 RBI, 1 BB, 7 SO, 1 SB

  • Mark Contreras hit two home runs and four RBIs this week. The 27-year-old could be the guy they call upon if Max Kepler heads to the IL.

Jordan Balazovic, #15, SP
1 Game, 5.0 IP, 0.00 ERA, 3 H, 2 BB, 9 SO

  • Balazovic has given up one earned run in his only two starts this month. The Twins’ top prospect has had a brutal season, but he’s slowly starting to come around as the year is coming to an end.

Ronny Henriquez, #22, SP
1 Game, 1-0, 5.0 IP, 3.60 ERA, 1 H, 1 BB, 9 SO, 1 HR

  • Ronny Henriquez could help the Twins right now if they need another arm in the bullpen. It might be too early to let him start, but he could be a serviceable starter relatively soon.
AA

Edouard Julien, #14, 2B
6 Games, .375 BA (9/24), 1 RBI, 4 BB, 6 SO, 1 SB

  • Edouard Julien continues to mash and will likely start the year with the St. Paul Saints next season. He’s someone to keep an eye on if the Twins need infield help next year.

Cody Laweryson, RHP
2 Games, 1-0, 11.0 IP, 0.00 ERA, 3 H, 1 BB, 13 SO, 1 HR

  • The Wichita Wind Surge have let Cody Laweryson loose this month, and it’s working. In two appearances, the right-hander has thrown 11 innings and is yet to give up a run. Before Sept., he was pitching maybe an inning or two a game.

Kody Funderbunk, LHP
1 Game, 1-0, 6.0 IP, 0.00 ERA, 4 H, 1 BB, 7 SO

  • Kody Funderbunk has had an underrated season for Wichita this year. The left-hander has posted an ERA of 3.04 in 97.2 innings pitched.
High-A

Jake Rucker, 3B
4 Games, .118 BA (2/17), 1 HR, 4 RBI, 1 BB, 4 SO

  • Jake Rucker has surprisingly had success at High-A. In 60 games with the Fort Myers Mighty Mussels, the Twins’ former 2021 MLB Draft pick had an OPS of .668. Since his promotion, he has an OPS of .792 in 55 games.
Low-A

Keoni Cavaco, 3B
4 Games, .429 BA (6/14), 2 HR, 3 RBI, 1 BB, 2 SO, 1 SB

  • There are weeks where Keoni Cavaco looks like a former first-round pick, and there are times when he doesn’t. This was one of those cases where he looks like a future star. The former No. 13 pick in the 2019 MLB Draft drove in 3 RBIs and was impressive.

Nate Baez, C
4 Games, .308 BA (4/13), 2 HR, 6 RBI, 1 BB, 6 SO, 1 SB

  • Nate Baez had an incredible game on Sept. 11. The Twins’ 12th round pick in the 2022 MLB Draft hit two home runs and drove in five RBIs in the Mighty Mussels 9-1 win over St. Lucie.
