The Minnesota Twins need bullpen help, and MLB.com recently published an article saying the front office should make a trade for David Bednar. Should Derrek Falvey and Thad Levine make a push for the 27-year-old reliever?

Bednar started his career with the San Diego Padres and has spent the last two years with the Pittsburg Pirates.

His numbers between the two organizations are night and day:

• Padres: 17 G, 17.1 IP, 0-2, 6.75 ERA, 1.615 WHIP
• Pirates: 92 G, 99.2 IP, 6-3, 2.26 ERA, 0.983 WHIP

You’d think with a larger sample size that his numbers would be worse, but that’s not the case. Bednar has found success with the Pirates, and he’s only pitched 39.0 innings this season. For reference, Griffin Jax has thrown 40.1 innings, and Jhoan Duran has thrown 37.0 innings.

Bednar has a FIP of 2.44 this season, which is really good. This means he doesn’t surrender many home runs or walks and causes more strikeouts.

Bednar throws 97 MPH, which would be a huge plus for this bullpen. Duran and Emilio Pagán are really the only two that throw with higher velocity. Throwing hard is not the end all be all, but it helps.

His percentile rankings are elite, and adding him to the bullpen would be a significant upgrade. But what’s the catch?

Bednar is under contract for at least another four years, and being that he’s 27, he’ll cost the Twins a good amount of assets. A good, young relief pitcher under team control will command a top prospect.

Is that worth it? Probably not. Minnesota can make trades for players on expiring deals, and that would cost a lot less. It sounds like quality over quantity, but it’s not. Relievers like Daniel Bard or David Robertson are good players and wouldn’t mortgage any long-term success.

Bednar is a good reliever and would help the Twins bullpen in a big way. However, the cost is high and might not be worth it in the long run.
