3 players the Twins should trade for at the MLB Trade Deadline
The Minnesota Twins need pitching if they want to make any sort of run in the postseason. The offense has been bad at times, but the pitching has been the weakest link to this point. With that in mind, who are three players this front office should target at the MLB Trade Deadline?
1. Frankie Montas, SP
Frankie Montas is the best pitcher on the trade market after Luis Castillo was dealt to the Seattle Mariners. Despite being the No. 1 guy available, the right-hander has dealt with a shoulder injury the last couple of weeks, and maybe the Twins can use that to their advantage in talks.
Last season he went 13-9 and posted an ERA of 3.37. Despite the Oakland Athletics’ struggles, Montas has lowered his ERA to 3.18.
He rarely gives up home runs (1.0 HR/9) and is a high strikeout thrower. It’s rare for him to pick up less than five-to-six Ks in an outing.
The other important thing he can do for the Twins is eat innings. Montas usually goes at least six if he’s pitching well.
The shoulder injury isn’t a big concern. Since the return, he combined to go eight innings and gave up two earned runs. If Minnesota were to trade for him, he’d be their No. 1 starter the day he puts on that TC hat.
2. David Robertson, RHP
Minnesota needs bullpen help. It’s their biggest weakness, and trading for one or two arms would go a long way. David Robertson is having a great season and wouldn’t cost the Twins a lot in assets. He’s 37 and will be an unrestricted free agent this offseason.
In 40.1 innings, Robertson has posted an ERA of 2.23. He also has a strikeout rate of 30.9 percent and a walk rate of 11.5 percent. Hitters are batting .161 off him this season, which ranks 12th in baseball amongst relievers.
Robertson would likely become the Twins setup man, with Jhoan Duran being closer.
He uses a three-pitch combo of a cutter, curveball and slider. The right-hander has great percentile rankings in everything but his walk and chase rate.
Robertson would be a great addition to the bullpen, and Minnesota could use a reliable option late in ball games.
3. Gregory Soto, LHP
The Twins could use more left-handers in the bullpen. They currently have Caleb Thielbar – who recently landed on the 15-day IL, and Jovani Moran. Danny Coulombe is also a lefty, but I don’t think we’ll ever see him pitch again.
Trading for Soto will cost a lot in assets, which is to be expected if you’re trading for an All-Star closer in your division.
He’s also under team control until 2026, which may be too difficult for the Twins to pull off. However, if they’re ever going to be serious about contending, then trading for Soto might be the right move.
He’s made the All-Star game in his last two seasons and has been one of the most dominant relievers in baseball.
For someone who throws 98 MPH, you’d like to see his strikeout rate a little higher than 25.5 percent, especially since he has a walk rate of 10.3.
He has the makeup to be a dominant reliever/closer for the Twins, and at 27, he’s just reaching his peak. Minnesota could help him with his command and strikeout rate, but a two-time All-Star would be a great get for this bullpen.

All great options you listed. I would love to have all those guys but realistically they may only get Robertson, the other 2 are unrealistic if you look at our track record.
