3 players the Minnesota Vikings should trade for at the NFL Trade Deadline
The NFL Trade Deadline is just days away, but should the Minnesota Vikings be buyers or sellers?
The deadline date is Nov. 1 at 3 p.m. CT. The Vikings are leading the division and are in a good position to take the North come January. The real question then becomes, stand pat or buy? There’s zero reason for this team to sell.
Darren Wolfson from KSTP noted on his podcast that the Vikings have inquired about Brandin Cooks and Chase Claypool. No deal is close, but they are making calls.
You can make the argument that Minnesota should be focusing on its defense. It’s been their biggest weakness, but Kevin O’Connell wants to run a high-powered offense. At this point, the front office should double down on that side of the ball and force opposing teams to shut down multiple weapons.
Here are three players the Vikings should trade for:
1. Jerry Jeudy, WR – Denver Broncos
If you would have told me at the beginning of the season that Jerry Jeudy would be on the trade block, I would have said you’re crazy. The Denver Broncos made a blockbuster trade for Russell Wilson, and it’s gone terribly wrong for them.
The Broncos are 2-5, and there’s a zero percent chance they win the division. The Kansas City Chiefs or Los Angles Chargers are going to run away with that title. With the playoffs quickly becoming out of the question for Denver, do they sell?
It’s looking like that might be the case, and Jeudy could recoup some of those lost assets in the Wilson trade. The 23-year-old has produced since entering the league, but he had a disappointing sophomore season.
This year, the former first-round pick has 386 yards and two touchdowns. This is probably his best season, but he’s dropped a lot of passes. Minnesota would be banking on his potential and financial control.
Would the Vikings be willing to move a second-round pick and potentially more in a trade? I’d lean towards no, but it’s something the front office should consider.
2. Mike Gesicki, TE – Miami Dolphins
I’m forever haunted by Mike Gesicki’s ‘Griddy’ dance. For that alone, I don’t know if I want him to wear the same-colored jersey as Justin Jefferson.
In all seriousness, Gesicki is a good tight end, and O’Connell’s offense would be lethal with a good TE.
Though he’s not on pace to do it again, the 27-year-old has put together two straight seasons with 700-plus yards. That’s not because he’s lost a step, but because Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle have been so incredible.
Gesicki immediately gives the Vikings a threat they haven’t had since Kyle Rudolph. Gesicki would be a nice red zone target and be the perfect weapon for Kirk Cousins.
The former Penn State standout will be a free agent this offseason, so he probably wouldn’t cost the Vikings much. Would a late draft pick hurt Minnesota? Probably not.
3. Stephon Gilmore, CB – Indianapolis Colts
Stephon Gilmore has been around the NFL for what feels like forever. The 32-year-old has had one of the most impressive careers and will be a Hall of Fame player when it’s all said and done.
Minnesota needs to improve its secondary. While Gilmore is 32 and may not be the young stud he once was, he still has a great IQ and feel for the game. This season, he’s allowing a passer rating of only 72.7.
He’s been targeted 40 times and has given up 24 receptions. For reference, that’s four percent more than his career average.
Gilmore will be a free agent this offseason, and the Indianapolis Colts are not a good team. They’d be wise to move the All-Pro corner for a late draft pick. If Minnesota can acquire him, their secondary will improve immensely.
