3 cornerbacks the Minnesota Vikings should sign
The Minnesota Vikings need to improve their secondary, but who are three potential cornerbacks they could sign?
The Vikings are changing their defense from a 4-3, to a 3-4. In doing so, the front office has gone out and signed Harrison Phillips, Za’Darius Smith and Jordan Hicks. This will surely improve the heart of the defense and wreak havoc on opposing offenses.
For this article, Patrick Peterson will be left off the list because I want to highlight three players who have not played in a Vikings uniform. I would, however, love to see P2 back in Minnesota.
1. Kyle Fuller
Kyle Fuller has been a player that I’ve been enamored with since he’s entered the league out of Virginia Tech. When he’s on the top of his game, he’s one of the best in the league.
Ed Donatell served as the Denver Broncos defensive coordinator from 2019-to-2021, so it’ll be interesting to see if he has any interest in bringing Fuller onboard to Minnesota. The former Virginia Tech star played one season in Denver, but it was a career-low year for him. He could be looking for a fresh start and a new system.
PFF projects him to earn a $5.75 million contract for one year, which seems a little too high. While Fuller has played well in the past, his 2021 season is a little alarming. He rated 111th out 116 cornerbacks. Yikes, that’s reaching Bashaud Breeland territory.
Nonetheless, I fully expect Fuller to bounce back and have a good season. He’s only 30 years old and has plenty left in the tank. If Minnesota could get him on a buy low contract, it could pay off nicely.
2. Bryce Callahan
Let’s keep the trend going and add another Broncos cornerback to the list.
Bryce Callahan didn’t have the best 2021 season, compared to what we saw in 2020. Last season he finished with a PFF grade of 60.0, compared to 2020 in which he recorded 84.1.
Still, he’s only 30 years old and would look good in Minnesota. He’s best in the slot but can step outside and cover there if need be.
Adding him would improve the secondary drastically. If the Vikings re-sign P2, slide Callahan in the slot, and draft a cornerback, then I’d feel a lot better about the defense heading into next season.
Last year, he failed to record an interception.
I’d like to believe that Donatell was a fan of Callahan and would like to bring him on board in Minnesota. PFF projects him signs a 2-year/$10 million deal. That’s only $5 million each season, which is a great price for someone of his caliber.
3. Stephon Gilmore
Stephon Gilmore isn’t the same player he once was, but that’s OK. Minnesota probably wouldn’t be in a position to land the former All-Pro safety if it wasn’t for his decline in play.
At 31, Gilmore played in eight games (injury) for the Carolina Panthers. I’d put money down that he’s healthy by the time training camp starts in late July/early August.
Pro Football Focus predicts that he will earn a 2-year/$25 million contract.
Gilmore is better in man-to-man and may not play as well if he’s put into zone coverages. He did however finish with a PFF grade of 77.1 last season.
The Vikings have a lot of cap constraints, but if they’re serious about improving their defense, then Gilmore fits the bill.
